Cloud Nothings are my most listened to band of the last month (proof) and they’re brilliant. They’re what Japandroids might sound like if they were better recorded and children of a more sombre upbringing, but they still cram loads of big powerful sounds into their songs. ‘Stay Useless’ and ‘Fall in’ are their funnest tracks, but ‘No sentiment’ is the most interesting song on their album Attack On Memory, because it could have been obtained by travelling to an alternate reality where Nirvana were still in existence. I love it’s intensity and roughness, but because it’s ‘A’ section is coupled with a more melodic counterpart, the song battles against itself to brilliant results.

Dems - Inner 0

Dems are three guys from London making wistful electronic music and this song is beautiful.

Not as sparse as James Blake, nor as raw as The xx - Inner O has a real yearning to it, and two minutes in, the tone changes and sounds as though the music has cracked a smile.

The video is a piece of art too.

So, this is incredible.

This is the first single off Tall Ships’ first full length, T=0, which is coming out on April 16th (same day as Maps & Atlases new album - expensive week).

The Brighton based band are going from strength to strength, taking a few strides away from their math-rock roots, arriving at a nice junction between a powerful yet anglular, and an accessible pop sound. The first two minutes are without vocals, but a brilliant looped riff carries the song along.

I’ve been listening to it pretty much non stop.

∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆

SO. Continuing the theme which seems to have evolved with my initial posts on this here blog, I am writing a new feature about a band with a symbol for a band name. Welcome to the frame - ∆.

Or their google friendly attire is Alt-J.

Triangles were always the most hipster of shapes, and I would assume the music accompanying a band name as such to be as pretentious as a juxtaposition.

However, annoyingly, a juxtaposition is in fact present with this band, for despite the obtuse name, the music is so well crafted and so interesting that it is actually really easily likable, and accessible to an extent. Any barrier of pretension crumbles.

Like (in my opinion) peers Wild Beasts, the vocals are odd initially, but become delicate upon perseverance. When the bass comes in on the above track ‘Fitzpleasure’, the dimension shifts and the sonic landscape opens up and becomes so vast that you become absorbed and lost somewhere in between some rocky depths of bass and beautifully worked trill harmonies, like being stuck halfway up a mountain.

Also, hunt down Breezeblocks which is free on their soundcloud.

Ok here it is.

†Hymns†

Another band adopting the † symbol, Hymns are comprised of the suitably biblically named Samuel Manville on dark guitars and Peter Reisner on thunderous drums. I’ve never heard anything like them, and their religious fascination, but without religious attributes, really intrigues me.

The album’s split into two (much like the bible) with the ferociously pent up first half named Cardinal Sins, and the mellower, more reflective second half, Contrary Virtues flexing their other musical muscles.

You can get a free download of Miracles from their bandcamp, which gives a taster for the latter sounds you’ll hear on the album, but give ‘A Punch to the Temple’ (see top of post) a spin because it’s one of the stand out tracks which will untie your shoelaces, make your shoes fall to the floor, then blow your socks off.

Old testament stuff.

La Dispute

This song by La Dispute is incredible. This band’s music could probably be considered Poetic-Hardcore, with their newest album Wildlife letting you in on tales and narratives with amazing depth and descripton.

Afformentioned King Park (above) tells the story of the aftermath of a drive-by shooting of an innocent kid.

I reckon that the story is told from the perspective of the young gunman, which seems to become apparent near the end of the song.

I dare you not to get goosbumps from 5:12 onwards.

†††

The first Crosses (†††) EP, which came out last year blew me away. Chino’s soothing but haunting voice over the top of the darkest of electronica created something beyond eerie.

There’s a new EP out today (unsurprisingly) called EP †† and I would hugely recommend buying it. If you’re a fan of Deftones you’ll find it familiar, and if you’re a fan of Drake you’ll find dark correlations.

The ep’s less than a fiver with artwork, a video and digital booklet all bundled into one zip file.

The first EP can be downloaded for free from www.crossesmusic.com.
